Before there was television…there were moving picture films…

21 02 2007

Okay…a couple of minutes ago out of the blue a friend asked how many old movies I’d seen…of course, if you know the friend, “random” is actually her legal middle name. She thought the number would be around 70…but I said nay nay, my friend. If I were to guess I’d approximate 150 or more…I’ve seen 80 of the AFI’s Top 100 Films – most of which would be considered classics; however, the fact that I have a tendency to watch them more than once means a completely accurate number is pretty hard to figure out.

Subsequently I found out that she has never even seen ONE old movie. Now I know that I’m a relative freak when it comes to my old movie obsession and accept the fact that most people won’t have seen more than say 10 such movies…but I have now made it an unofficial task to introduce them (in an intrusive and annoying way, I’m sure) into the lives of others.

So naturally I set about making a list of my Top 10 (which really is about Top 50…but I don’t want to scare her off)…a list of recommendations, if you will…for her to check out. It was painful narrowing it down but I did it…so without further ado…I present you with my Top 10 Movies 1930-1970 (in no particular order):

1. Two for the Road (1967)
2. The Philadelphia Story (1941)
3. Laura (1944)
4. Casablanca (1942)
5. Some Like It Hot (1959)
6. Rebecca (1940)
7. Roman Holiday (1953)
8. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
9. Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
10. It Happened One Night (1934)

So yeah…you’re probably thinking I have no life and spend all of it watching movies. Which…is possibly true…but frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn. *insert eyeroll here*

That’s right…I went there.
