What are your “anytime” movies?

29 06 2008

When I say “anytime” movies, I mean simply that no matter your mood or the time of day, you can quite happily put these movies on, sit down and watch them from beginning to end. Not be confused, of course, with your “favourite” movies. I have a ridiculous number of favourite movies (which vary on an almost daily basis) but the vast majority of them I need to be in the right state of mind to watch – some require more focus then I have at the time, some are far too depressing when I’m already feeling blue, and some are too ridiculous when I’m in a more serious mood. So there is a very small number of movies that I can put on at anytime and truly enjoy.

I was in a very “blah” mood this evening and couldn’t decide on a DVD to throw on, despite the embarrassment of choices…so it got me thinking about what movies are fail-safes for me and can be watched at anytime. The list is small (although I’m sure there are more I can’t think of) but here’s what I came up with (in no particular order):

1. The Philadelphia Story The Philadelphia Story

2. Out of Africa Out of Africa

3. Two for the Road Two for the Road

4. Serenity Serenity

5. Hot Fuzz Hot Fuzz

6. Band of Brothers Band of Brothers

7. Monty Python and the Holy Grail Monty Python and the Holy Grail

8. Casino Royale Casino Royale

9. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

10. Braveheart Braveheart

11. Laura Laura

12. The Last Unicorn The Last Unicorn

13. Gone with the Wind Gone With the Wind

14. Rebecca Rebecca

15. It’s a Wonderful Life It\'s a Wonderful Life

16. It Happened One Night It Happened One Night

17. Jaws Jaws

So there you have it. Come rain or shine…I can watch any of these at anytime. Some are amazing movies that show the best of what films can be, others I love for more nostalgia-based reasons, some are just fun and somewhat guilty pleasures.

Missing? I’m a huge fan of musicals but find I have to be in the right mood to watch them…so none of my favs made the list. Sorry, Misters Kelly and Astaire!

So what about you? What are your “anytime” movies?

My initial thought when you posed this question was hands down JAWS! And lookie what we have here once you scroll down through 16 other films… Jaws :)

Honourable mentions? I’d have to throw down the musicals and go with Singing in the Rain and On the Town (sometimes Guys and Dolls) ’cause they don’t require attention and gosh darn it! They’re just so much fun!

Aww man, you’ve inspired me to throw down my own blog with this subject matter – To be continued…

Oh my god! The last unicorn!! I Love that movie. My sister made me a CD with all the songs by America on it and Adam looks at me funny when I listen to it. Dammit…now I have to go watch that movie.

My movie likes are much less sophisticated. Harry Potter, LOTR, Pirates of the Caribbean. Basically, I am good to go for a good fantasy movie anytime.

I have a CD too! And I listen to it all the time…and sing along. So we can both be weird together!

I love all the movies you’ve listed and they are all in my favourites list…but all of them are the kind of movies where I want to sit down and watch them like I’m at the movie theater…maybe that’s another list like “My Experience Movies”…lol
